Take the phobia out of homophobia by putting a human face on it.
Stories are simple, powerful, entertaining ways to deal with tough issues. Hearts and minds open spontaneously when people listen to true stories told by the people who lived them.
I speak openly and honestly about my experience growing up gay. I tell my story from a place of acceptance and non-judgment, sharing my experience without telling the audience what to think or believe. I joyfully welcome all questions - especially the ones people may not have dared to ask.
Listeners can expect to leave with new insights, greater confidence in the twists and turns of their own journey and a renewed freedom to express themselves more truthfully and openly in their own lives. Real stories reconnect us to compassion for our humanness and the journey we all share.
My teenage son enjoys participating and is willing to accompany me when invited (and available).
Below are comments from people who have heard me speak.
Vicki and her son are REAL! Through the sharing of their life stories, our SEED participants are able to safely uncover the myths and stereotypes of homosexuality by learning about these two human beings. I enjoyed Vicki's genuine nature and openness. She is who she is, and her story and presentation are enhanced because of it!
Wendy Webster, SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) Facilitator
Vicki creates a safe and courageous space for us to explore and understand our diversity. She gives us the opportunity to explore without judgment.
Sandra Larson, Life Coach
Vicki's heartfelt story blew me away! I left wishing more of America could have seen/heard her tell her story. We need to see the human side of this issue - and face the fact that homosexuality is not simply a "choice." No one watching/listening to her would ever think she would CHOOSE the experiences she had. Her story was a very powerful thing to hear. I can't even imagine what it must have felt like to live it, feel it, breathe it.

Stories (Talks can be created to suit your needs)
Our Hearts Know - Growing Up Gay in a Straight World
This story is well-received in adult diversity programs. It is simply, and profoundly, the story of one lesbian. Vicki knew she was "different" long before she had a clue about sexuality. Desperately wanting to belong, she began her quest for answers. When Vicki tells her intriguing and memorable story, she brings to life the essence and emotions of it. Listeners, touched by her struggle and courage, leave with greater understanding and deeper compassion for everyone trying to make sense of this issue.
Our Children Are Calling - Gay Parents/Straight Kids and Straight Parents/Gay Kids
Straight and not straight, all kids are impacted by homophobia and gender limits. If you work with kids, advocate for kids, parent kids or simply spend time with them, this story is for you. Vicki shares the story of her son and his experience with lesbian parents. She also shares her story of being a lesbian born into a straight family.
We can tell kids what to think and who to be, but Life is inherently wise and our kids courageously persist in telling us who they truly are. Educators and caregivers especially appreciate the insights Vicki shares as they work to create a safer, more nurturing environment for all children.
The God That Life Has Shown Me - The Spiritual Journey of One Gay Woman
What about God? What about religion? What's really true when it comes to people who are not hetersexual? Growing up gay in a straight world was just practice for coming out spiritually. Vicki has struggled with deep beliefs that some consider too sacred to even question. She speaks from her heart about coming to know a different God and learning to trust in Life and Love.
If you're on a spiritual journey, Vicki's authentic story will encourage and uplift you. Expect to leave with new insights, greater confidence in the twists and turns of your own journey, and a renewed freedom to express yourself more truthfully and openly in your own life.
